Information on Trekking Trails to Island Peak and Everest Base Camp!

The trekking trails to the Island Peak Climb with Everest Base Camp Trek starts and ends with a scenic flight to Lukla. The route continues from Lukla to Phakding, to the Namche Bazaar, through Tengboche, and Dingboche, to Lobuche and Gorak Shep, to arrive at the Everest base camp, onward to Pheriche and Chhukung, and upward to the Island Peak base camp, Island Peak summit and finally  Pangboche, where we will begin our return journey.

Imja Tse, also known as the Island Peak, is so named as it appears like an island amid a sea of ice. Island Peak is surrounded by the mountain peak of the Ama Dablam and Lhotse in the Everest region, 10 km away from the south of Mt. Everest. Climbing up to Island Peak Summit at 6,189m offers you superb views of Mt. Makalu at 8,475m, and Mt. Bruntse at 7,129m in the east and Mt. Ama Dablam at 6,812m in the south, including a panoramic view of the Khumbu valley. Additionally, this trek takes you to the Chhukung village, a beautiful pass that provides spectacular views of Mt. Thamserku, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Kongtega as well as other mountains and glacier lakes.

  1. Day 01 Welcome to Nepal via Tribhuvan International Airport

    Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, one of our staff members will be waiting at the exit gate to welcome you and take you to the hotel, where you will rest for a while. Our team will be waiting to meet you at our office. In the evening, you will have a welcome dinner along with our team in a typical Nepali restaurant, where you can taste real Nepali food and view a live traditional dance. Also, you will meet our team and your tour guide during a short meeting.

    Note: Dinner and an introductory meeting will be organized as per your arrival time. If it is not the day of your arrival, it will be postponed for the next day.

  2. Day 02 One-day Short Kathmandu Trip and Trek Orientation

    You will have an entire day of sightseeing around the Kathmandu valley, the capital city of Nepal. After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, your tour guide will take you to the world-famous historical and religious tourist sites of Nepal: the Pashupatinath Temple, the Swayambunath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. All these sites are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Returning from this short trip, you will have time to rest, and then there will be an orientation meeting on trekking in the Everest region. The session will focus on providing information about trekking in Nepal and answer your questions. Please, check your equipment after the meeting and let us know if you need any equipment. We will help you buy any necessary trekking gear.

  3. Day 03 Flight to Tenzing Hillary Airport (Lukla) at 2,800m and Trek to Phakding at 2,652m

    Flight Time: 40 minutes, Trekking Time: 3 to 4 hours

    A breathtaking flight to Lukla over the lush green valleys and towering snow-clad peaks takes you to the beautiful Tenzing Hillary airstrip of Lukla. After having lunch and enjoying a brief rest, we will walk along the farmlands, the quaint Cheplung village, and the banks of the Dudh Koshi River. The trail passes through a moderate incline and downhill path until it reaches the beautiful Phakding village from Lukla.

  4. Day 04 Trek to Namche Bazaar at 3,440m

    Trekking Duration: 5 to 6 hours

    This day’s trail passes over many suspension bridges across the Dudh Koshi River before reaching the entrance of the Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park at Monjo. The trail then crosses the dense forest bedecked with rhododendrons where we will encounter endangered Himalayan wildlife. An uphill trek up to the Namche Bazaar takes you to the most popular trekking stop of the Khumbu region. The Namche Bazaar is a gateway to the Everest region which offers your first sight of Mt. Everest and the other surrounding peaks.

  5. Day 05 First Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar

    This is your first day to acclimatize yourself to the higher elevation properly. To avoid altitude sickness, we will do a short hike up to the Sherpa Museum and Everest View Hotel. Hiking up to the local Sherpa museum will provide you with some extra information about the culture, festivals, and history of the Sherpa people along with the information about the diverse flora and fauna found in the Khumbu region. Furthermore, hiking up to the Everest View Hotel offers you beautiful views of Mt. Everest at 8,848m and the entire Khumbu valley. After returning to Namche, you will have time to rest.

  6. Day 06 Trek to Tengboche at 3,870m

    Trekking Time: 5 to 6 hours

    After having your breakfast and witnessing the beautiful sunrise views over the radiant mountains, we will continue our trek to Tengboche. The trail passes through the rhododendron and pine forests and crosses the festooned bridge over the Dudh Koshi River. On the way, small, attractive villages adorned with prayer flags will appear. While trekking, enjoy the views of many mountains such as Mt. Everest at8,848m, Mt. Lhotse at 8,414m, Mt. Nuptse at 7,861m, Mt. Thamserku at 6,608m, Mt. Ama Dablam at 6,856m, and Mt. Kongde Ri. First, we will descend towards the Imja Khola and then ascend to reach Tengboche, which is famous for the largest monastery in Khumbu valley.

  7. Day 07 Trek to Dingboche at 4,360m

    Trekking Time: 5 to 6 hours

    Before heading along further trekking trails, we will visit the Tengboche monastery where you can enjoy fantastic sunrise views, including the Himalayan ranges along the backdrop of the monastery. After returning, we will descend along the rhododendron forests, cross a suspension bridge over the Imja Khola, and ascend towards the Pangboche village. A further climb leads you to the vast fertile landscape of Dingboche. The trail passes through several chortens—Buddhist shines, Mani walls, and small traditional villages. Here you can witness the mountain views, especially Mt. Ama Dablam.

  8. Day 08 Second Acclimatization Day in Dingboche

    This will be another acclimatizing day for altitude in the beautiful village of Dingboche, which is a popular resting point for many Everest trekkers. Rather than rest all day, a hike up to nearby places will be good for to properly adapting yourself to the higher elevation. Hiking up to Chhukung or Nangkartshang Gompa will provide you with an excellent view of Mt Makalu at 8,463m, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Tawache, and Mt. Ama Dablam. Upon your return from your hike, you can interact with the local people to experience the Himalayan lifestyle and warm hospitality.

  9. Day 09 Trek to Lobuche at 4,940m

    Trekking Time:  5 to 6 hours

    The trail to Lobuche descends to Dugla via the Pheriche village following a steep ascent over the terminal moraine of the Khumbu glacier. Encounter the stone memorials of Everest climbers festooned with prayer ribbons on the way to Lobuche. Enjoy views of Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Tawache, Kongma Tse, and Mt. Nuptse.

  10. Day 10 Trek to Gorak Shep at 5,180m and Hike to Everest Base Camp at 5,365m

    Trekking Time: 6 to 7 hours

    After having your breakfast, the trek continues onward to Gorak Shep. Over many inclines and descents along the trail to EBC, you will be rewarded with the mesmerizing views of Mt. Everest and its surrounding peaks. The trail passes through streams, the moraine, and rocky hills. Please use your equipment and stay with the crew through this critical path. Then, celebrate your success in accomplishing one of the most challenging treks in Nepal. Witness the beauty of Everest right in front of you! Feel the energy that has been radiating off this highest mountain for thousands of years! Afterward, trek back to Gorak Shep following the same route.

  11. Day 11 Hike to Kala Patthar at 5,555m and Return to Lobuche at 4,940m

    Trekking Time: 8 hours

    Kala Patthar offers you a 360-degree panoramic view of Mt. Everest and the surrounding mountains of Mt. Khumbetse, Mt. Pumori, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Thamserku, and many more. An early morning trek to Kala Patthar provides you with an amazing sunrise view over the towering mountains. To escape the treacherously windy weather, we will start our trek very early in the morning. The trails ascend and descend. Walking downhill to Pheriche through the moraine and crossing the bridge over the stream, we will return to Lobuche.

  12. Day 12 Trek from Lobuche to Chhukung at 4,730m

    Trekking Duration: 6 to 7 hours.

    Chhukung is the gateway to the Island Peak Base Camp Trek on a less crowded hiking trail. Descending gradually to Imja Khola, we will reach the small settlement of Chhukung.

    Today, we will also start our climbing training. Your tour guide will teach you proper skills to use the climbing gear, such as ice axes, climbing boots, crampons, harnesses, ascenders, etc. along with peak climbing techniques. You will also learn how to use ropes for ascending and descending. For the rest of the day, we will spend our time either on hiking up to high camp or resting.

  13. Day 13 Hike from Chhukung to Island Peak Base Camp at 5,200m.

    Today’s trek is on a fairly steep trail, climbing south at first and then heading east along the mail line of the valley. Walking on a winding path below the southern side of the moraine from the Lhotse glacier, our hike continues on a pleasant trail beside a stream. Then, we follow a route through the Imja and Lhotse glacier moraines to a broad valley bordering the southwest side of the Island Peak.

  14. Day 14 Hike to Island Peak Summit at 6,189m and return to Island Peak Base Camp.

    Trekking Duration: 10-12 hours.

    After waking up early in the morning and having breakfast, we will begin to climb up the summit with headlamps, scaling the rocky trail. Our goal is to reach the summit before the afternoon in order to escape the high winds. The trail ascends beyond the Peak Base Camp before reaching a vertical hillside. Here we will use our climbing gear and skills. Following a ridgeline and glacier, we will reach the summit. Celebrate your successful climb up the Island Peak by witnessing the astonishing vistas. Then, we will walk back down to the Island Peak Base Camp.

  15. Day 15 Trek from the Island Peak Base Camp to Pangboche at 3,985m.

    Trekking Duration: 5 to 6 hours.

    Today we will trek to the lower elevations so that hiking will be much easier. Descending from the broad valley of the Khumbu glacier, we will pass through the beautiful Sherpa villages to reach Pangboche. Surrounded by Everest to its north, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kangtaiga to the east, the Kongde range to the south and the Imja Tse River flowing through the broad fertile valley, Pangboche is a picturesque village where you will find a large settlement of the Sherpa people.

  16. Day 16 Trek from Pangboche to the Namche Bazaar.

    Trekking Duration: 4 to 5 hours.

    Retracing our walk down to the Imja Khola and up to the rhododendron forest to Tengboche, we will reach Tengboche. After having lunch at Tengboche, we will continue our hike along the hillside decorated with rhododendrons and juniper trees. Crossing the suspension bridge over the Dudh Koshi River and walking down the pine forests passing chorten—Buddhist shines, we will reach the army camp at the Namche Bazaar. On the way, we will encounter the native Himalayan flora and wildlife, such as goats, snow leopards, colorful pheasants, and others. Explore the market place and share your experiences with local people.

  17. Day 17 Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla.

    Trekking Duration: 6 to 7 hours.

    We are now revisiting the trek we passed only a few days ago. Returning to Lukla, we move through the rocky terrains, walk downhill along the Dudh Koshi River, and cross several suspension bridges. Several Sherpa villages decorated with strings of prayer flags and prayer stones will appear along the way. Enjoy the rest of your time exploring Lukla and enjoying the local wine and cuisine.

  18. Day 18 Fly to Kathmandu.

    After an early breakfast, we will head towards the airport. The flight to Lukla will take you back to breathtaking scenes of snow-clad mountains and green landscapes. After arriving at the Kathmandu domestic airport, you will be transferred to your hotel. After checking into the hotel, you can either rest for the remainder of the day or explore nearby places and the lovely tourist spot, Thamel!  If interested, you can shop for gifts from Nepal for your family and loved ones.

  19. Day 19 Reserve day.

    This day is reserved in case there are changes to the regular trekking itinerary. It is not uncommon in higher elevations, for the weather to become unpredictably bad. You can use this day as you wish or explore the popular tourist places in Kathmandu such as Thamel for shopping or sightseeing.

  20. Day 20 Final Departure.

    Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transported to the International Airport at Kathmandu, three hours before your flight. We hope to see you again! Have a safe and pleasant journey!

Hotels, Tea Houses and Lodges

Accommodation in Kathmandu will be in a 3 or 4-star hotel.

Accommodation during the trek will be in tea house or lodges. Some accommodations at lower altitudes offer fully equipped rooms with electricity, western toilet facility, wi-fi, and hot showers. Whereas some tea houses, especially at the higher altitude offer very basic kind of services.

You will be accommodated on a twin-basis during the trek. Most single rooms have twin beds with some basic furniture like a small table or a chair. If you want a single room for yourself, let us know in advance before the trek.

Normally, beds contain pillow and sheets. Almost all tea houses provide blankets but it is advisable to use your sleeping bag which will be provided by us in case it becomes too cold.

Some tea houses especially those at lower altitudes have proper western toilets. As you move higher some tea houses use squat toilet facilities. Also, it is important to know that some tea houses do not provide toilet paper in the toilets.

In higher altitudes, you will usually have to pay extra for charting electronic devices or taking a hot shower. Laundry services are also available in some lodges at an extra price. Wifi cards can also be bought at these lodges. There are multiple options available depending on the data limit and speed.
