The trekking trail of west Nepal!

After explorations of Kathmandu heritage sites, full of monuments, the trek will begin with the sweeping flight around 45 minutes to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. From Nepalgunj, we will take again domestic flight to Jhupal, the starting point of our trek. The trekking trail goes ahead with the admiration of the fascinating rain shadow landscapes of the Himalayas, colorful barren slopes of the mountains, several lovely local villages, scenic surroundings, you will enter into the beautiful Shey Phoksundo National Park, inhabited by the endangered wildlife. 18 days Lower Dolpo trek itinerary will take us through the dense beautiful forest of pines, bamboos, rhododendrons, juniper along with the huge meadows, terraced fields, and Shey Phoksundo National Park. You may get chances to encounter with the rare wild animals such as; Himalayan Musk Deer, Snow Leopard, Blue Sheep and many more during your trek.   1. Day 01 Arrival in TIA Kathmandu and Transfer to Hotel (1300 m/4264 ft)

    Arrive safely at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. One of Real Sherpa Adventures representatives will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. As you reach the hotel, you can check in while you are greeted with some complimentary welcome drinks. After some rest, you will be introduced to the trekking guide and our other staff members. In the evening, you can stroll around and explore the tourist hub of Thamel Bazaar and familiarize yourself with the place. Our team will also offer you a welcome dinner, where you can enjoy a delicious meal with our team. After having dinner, stay overnight in the hotel at Kathmandu.

  2. Day 02 Kathmandu Sightseeing and Trek Preparation

    Have an early breakfast and get ready for a full-day Kathmandu sightseeing tour with our professional guide. You will explore some highlights of our UNESCO world heritage sites such as Pashupatinath Temple, the holiest Hindu Temple; Boudhanath Stupa, the world’s biggest Buddhist stupa; Swayambhunath, as famous as the ”Monkey Temple,” and Kathmandu Durbar Square. After exploration, you will return to the hotel and attend a short orientation by one of our representatives about the trek to Lower Dolpo. The next day, we will begin our journey to lower Dolpo, so get ready for the next day’s trek and pack all of the essentials into your backpack. Have dinner and stay overnight in the same hotel.

  3. Day 03 Fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (152 m/500 ft) 1 hrs

    After having breakfast, take an hour-long domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, a town near the Nepal-India border. During your trip, you can enjoy the scenery on the way to Western Nepal. As you reach Nepalgunj, you can stroll around the town – an interesting Terai business hub of Nepal, where you can explore both the local Hindu & Muslim culture. You will also encounter Muslim villages along with the mini zoo at Nepalgunj. After exploring, you can have dinner and stay overnight in the hotel at Nepalgunj.

  4. Day 04 Fly Nepalgunj to Juphal (2,320 m/7,610 ft) 45 mins and Trek to Dunai (2,850 m/9,348 ft) 2-3 hrs

    Have breakfast and depart from Nepalgunj with an approximately 45 minute-long flight to Juphal, the official trekking point from where you will begin trekking to Dunai. As you reach Juphal, you will see that town is beautifully located over the Himalayan foothills. Once you begin your trek, you can enjoy the magnificent views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks to the north. Continue to trek through the beautiful terraced fields and on to the fascinating Bheri River and its narrow gorge. Finally, 2 to 3-hours of hiking will lead us to Dunai, the administrative headquarters of the Dolpo region. Once in Dunai, you will explore the Dunai surroundings. After exploration, have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house at Dunai.

  5. Day 05 Trek Juphal to Tarakot (2,543 m/8,341 ft) 5-6 hrs

    Have breakfast and continue to trek along the southern bank of the beautiful Bheri River, then proceed to travel upstream with an easy trail. During your hike, you will pass through numerous beautiful, deep gorges, hanging bridges and remote villages of the highland. The ensuing trial will follow a large canyon lined with pine trees and an original path built about 7 meters above the river. On the way, the picturesque terraced fields of Tarakot greet us eventually and gives an energetic and exciting sense of progress on your journey. As you reach Tarakot, have dinner and stay overnight in the lodge at Tarakot.

  6. Day 06 Trek Tarakot to Laini (3,160 m/10,365 ft) 6-7 hrs

    Have breakfast and depart beautiful Tarakot. Continue our trek alongside Tarap Chu River and cross it twice before reaching Sandul Gompa. The path leads through farm terraces and rural villages, where you can enjoy an encounter with the local people. After making a few ups and downs, we will finally encounter the river bed where we will reach today’s destination, Laini, which at an elevation of 3160 m. Once there, you can explore the beauty of Laini. Have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house.

  7. Day 07 Trek Laini to Nawarpani (3,545 m/11,627 ft) 4-5 hrs

    Have breakfast and continue the climb on a steep trail, walking along switchbacks above the Tarap River. The walk is quite exciting as the valley becomes a narrow gorge where in some places, you can jump from one side to another. The trail will begin to and take us to the bank of the Chyugur Khola, from where a short trek will take us to Nawarpani. As you reach Nawarpani, you can enjoy witnessing the local culture. Have dinner in the local guest and spend the night over at Nawarpani.

  8. Day 08 Trek Nawarpani to Do Tarap (4,090 m/13,415 ft) 7-8 hrs

    Have an early breakfast and continue to hike gradually upwards, which leads us to Kamattarka at the confluence of the Tarap Chu and Lang Khola – a stream flowing from the east. The ensuing trek will cross a narrow gorge and leave the tree line behind us. You can enjoy the sight of wild rose and juniper bushes, typical of the dry inner Himalayan valleys. After walking for several more hours, we will finally reach the village of Dho Tarap, which is surrounded by an irregular stone wall. Enjoy exploring the beautiful villages, then have dinner and stay overnight in the guesthouse at Dho Tarap.

  9. Day 09 Do Tarap acclimatization and exploration day

    Have a local breakfast, and today we will spend the whole day visiting the nearby monasteries. We will also have a chance to get acquainted with the local culture. The Dolpo people wear handmade clothing that is sometimes dyed a maroon color, and they favor Tibetan style combat boots or dhocha (boots with upturned toes) for footwear. You can witness both genders often wearing religious amulets and strings of coral, amber, and turquoise. You will be amazed to see their unique culture, costumes, and lifestyle. Have a delicious dinner with the local people and stay overnight in the guest house at Do Tarap.

  10. Day 10 Trek Do Tarap to Numa La Base Camp (4,440 m/14,563 ft) 4-5 hrs

    Have an early breakfast and continue our journey onwards towards Numa La Base Camp, which is situated at an elevation of 4440 m. Continue to trek towards the upper Tarap Valley and follow its plains, with patches of lush, verdant grass on both sides of the river, which is entirely different from the other parts of Inner Dolpo. We will continue to travel upstream on this fun track that is led by the Tarap Chu all the way. We will continue to walk up the valley on a rough trail until we reach the Numa La Base Camp. As you reach Base Camp, we will explore the Camp and its stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Finally, have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house at Numa La Base Camp.

  11. Day 11 Trek Numa La Base Camp to Pelung Tang (4465 m/14,645 ft) 6-7 hrs

    Have an early breakfast and continue the trek by leaving Numa La Base Camp and cross the Numa La pass on a steep trail that leads up the top ridge of the pass. Make progress by following the ridge with incredible views of the barren mountains of Dolpo up to Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167 m). Again, we will descend to Pelung Tang. Upon arrival, you can explore the village, and later have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house at Pelung Tang.

  12. Day 12 Trek Pelung Tang to Dajok Tang (4,080 m/13,382 ft) 5-6 hrs

    Have breakfast and continue the trek with a steep climb up to the top of Baga La pass. You can enjoy fantastic views of the dry landscape and the distant snow-capped mountains including Mt. Kanjirowa. Stay at the top of the pass and enjoy taking pictures with mesmerizing views of the mountains. Later, we will descend to Dajok Tang and explore the village nearby. Have dinner and stay overnight in Dajok Tang.

  13. Day 13 Trek Dajok Tang to Ringmo Gaon / Phoksundo Lake (3,600 m/11,808 ft) 3-4 hrs

    Have an early breakfast and begin to trek alongside beautiful pine forests and alpine vegetation. You will reach Dajok, explore the village and continue the journey to Phoksundo Lake. You will get a chance to explore the traditional Tibetan village of Ringmo. You can also encounter the local people of Ringmo and learn about the local sub-culture during your trek. Have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house at Ringmo / Phoksundo Lake.

  14. Day 14 Phoksundo Lake rest and exploration day.

    Have breakfast and explore the great Phoksundo Lake and camp at its shores. Enjoy the sight of various yak caravans moving in and out of Ringmo, mostly heading towards the Tibetan border on remote mountain trails. On the way to the beautiful lake, we can also explore nearby monastery. As we reach Phoksundo Lake, we can enjoy a relaxing walk on the serene lakeshore. Today we will explore the serene, crystal-clear Lake Phoksundo and its surrounding areas, which possess a great view. The Lake itself also makes for a spectacular sight as you explore the small unnamed lakes around it. Have dinner and stay overnight at Phoksundo.

  15. Day 15 Trek Phoksundo Lake to Shyangta (2,520 m/8,265 ft) 5-6 hrs

    After breakfast, we will continue to trek downhill to Chepka. We will follow a trail of massive overhanging rock with stunning landscapes. Here can be found find many essential medicinal minerals which are believed locally to cure almost anything. Continuing, we will traverse a mountain pass with lovely villages. The trail will wind gradually along the riverside, followed by a steep ascent to the top of the hill. You will reach the beautiful Phoksundo Lake, one of the most famous lakes in the world. Enjoy the view of the most beautiful Phoksundo Lake. Keep hiking along several descents and ascents until you reach Shyangta. Once there, explore its beautiful surroundings as you stroll around. Have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house at Shyangta.

  16. Day 16 Trek Shyangta to Juphal (2,320 m/7,610 ft) 5-6 hrs

    After an early breakfast, we will continue our trek by following the gently sloping trail upwards to Juphal by following the Sulighat, surrounded by birch trees. Here you can enjoy the most spectacular views of the mountain above us and Jhupal Village below. As you reach Jhupal, stroll around and explore the vibrant town. Have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house at Jhupal.

  17. Day 17 Fly back to Juphal 25 mins to Nepalgunj 1 hr to Kathmandu (1,300 m/4,264 ft)

    Have breakfast and take a domestic flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj. Around 25 minutes’ flight will offer you panoramic views of the green and white mountains below. Then we will take a connecting flight to Kathmandu. During your flight for Kathmandu, you can also enjoy the stunning aerial views of the scenery. As you reach Kathmandu, we will transport you to the same hotel, where you can check in and get some rest. In the evening, you can enjoy a farewell dinner with some programmed entertainment that showcases the typical culture of Nepal. Stay overnight in the hotel at Kathmandu.

  18. Day 18 Final Departure

    Have breakfast and depart. Check out of your hotel, and one of our representatives will transfer you to the International airport as per your flight schedule. You will be there three hours before your flight. We wish you a safe trip toward your motherland and hope that we will meet you very soon in Nepal for the next trek.

Hotels, Tea Houses and Lodges

Accommodation in Kathmandu will be in a 3 or 4-star hotel.

Accommodation during the trek will be in tea house or lodges. Some accommodations at lower altitudes offer fully equipped rooms with electricity, western toilet facility, wi-fi, and hot showers. Whereas some tea houses, especially at the higher altitude offer very basic kind of services.

You will be accommodated on a twin-basis during the trek. Most single rooms have twin beds with some basic furniture like a small table or a chair. If you want a single room for yourself, let us know in advance before the trek.

Normally, beds contain pillow and sheets. Almost all tea houses provide blankets but it is advisable to use your sleeping bag which will be provided by us in case it becomes too cold.

Some tea houses especially those at lower altitudes have proper western toilets. As you move higher some tea houses use squat toilet facilities. Also, it is important to know that some tea houses do not provide toilet paper in the toilets.

In higher altitudes, you will usually have to pay extra for charting electronic devices or taking a hot shower. Laundry services are also available in some lodges at an extra price. Wifi cards can also be bought at these lodges. There are multiple options available depending on the data limit and speed.
