The first successful ascent of
Mount Makalu was accomplished on May 15, 1955, by a French team led by Jean
Franco, including Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy. The team went up the mountain
via the Northeast Ridge, which is the most well-traveled route to the top.
There have been other successful attempts since the first ascent to reach the
peak.
