Upper Dolpa to Mustang is consider as one of the most challenging yet rewarding trek of Nepal.Away from the hustle and bustle of industrialization, the area still boasts a predominance of the traditional Bon-Po religion. Even before Buddhism arrived on the Tibetan plateau, this was a religion locals used to follow.
A great altitude crossing passes between 4,500 and 5,500 m.
Isolated villages, monasteries and Tibetan culture.

Overview
Tibetan culture has a strong influence on the area. It is home to a variety of wildlife that is not seen in the lower Himalayan regions. The treks from Jhupal are in the upper region.  You will reach Phoksundo National Park via the trail. This aquamarine lake is 3,611 meters high.It is the most beautiful and profound lake in Nepal. The water is considered sacred by the locals. The surrounding landscape, unique rock formations, and alpine vegetation all contribute to the lake's allure.

Through the Juphal airport, we are transported to a timeless land that has not yet been connected by road. Along with lesser-known locations like the confluence with its yak caravans and Charka on the way to Mustang, we also visit the main attractions of Dolpo, such as the breathtaking turquoise lake of Phoksundo, Shey Gompa, Saldang, and Dho Tarap. After passing across several high passes in isolated valleys, we finally reach Jomsom.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience, the Upper Dolpa journey to Mustang is sure to leave you with priceless memories. Whether you're searching for challenges, cultural experiences, or breathtaking scenery. Everything you might need is available on the Upper Dolpa Trek to Mustang. This journey will leave a lasting impression and deepen one's appreciation of the beauty and diversity of this remote yet alluring part of Nepal.

DAY 3: FLIGHT NEPALGUNJ — JUPHAL — KAGBENI

Impressive flight subject to climatic hazards between Nepalgunj and Juphal. We landed on the paved track in August 2017. After getting to know our team, we walk down to the village of Suligad (2,080 m). We make an administrative stop and present our Bas Dolpo permits. We then go up to Kageni and stop at Sangta, an enchanting bivouac site.
NB: If the weather makes the flight impossible, we may have the possibility of going to Juphal by helicopter under certain conditions: weather and a sufficient number of participants to co-charter. DAY 4: TREKKING FROM SANGTA — CHEPKA TO RECHI (2940M)

We continue our progression along the Suli Gad river, first on the right bank and then on the left bank. The torrent that comes from Lake Phoksumdo is tumultuous. We pass a cliff overlooking the river. Overnight in camp at Rechi, a village at a respectable distance from the gorges.

DAY 5: RECHI — CHUNUWAR — RIGMO — PHOKSUNDO LAKE

As we climb the vegetation becomes lower and rarer. We pass the center of the national park of Phoksumdo, then the winter village of Palam. We continue our progression towards the high point at 3,700 m. A small watchtower allows us to observe the highest waterfall in Nepal whose waters come straight from the lake. An easy descent takes us to the village of Rigmo. Beautiful camp in front of Phoksumdo lake.

5 hrs of walking
Final Altitude:3,610m
Meals: breakfast – lunch – dinner

DAY 6: PHOKSUNDO LAKE

Day of acclimatization which allows us to get to know this Tibetan village better. The inhabitants are of Buddhist religion and Bön (the pre-Buddhist religion). An easy walk in the forest along the lake leads us to the Bön monastery. Dolpo is one of the rare regions of the Tibetan cultural area to practice this pre-Buddhist religion and yet very close to Buddhism. Marietta Kind, a Swiss specialist in this religion helps the village school.

DAY 8: TREKKING FORM FOREST CAMP TO NANGDALO BASE CAMP (4717M)

We start in the forest and cross the torrent that comes out of the Ghent La gorge (take the ford sandals in your bags in the morning). The passage through this alternative pass avoids many crossings of a strong current river and a bivouac with low night temperatures. In addition, it is a pleasant route that crosses many grassy areas in the middle of detrital rocks.

Final altitude:4,717m
Meals: breakfast – lunch – dinner
Accommodation: night in a tent

DAY 9: TREKKING FROM BASE CAMP - NANGDALO PASS (5350M) TO SHEY GOMPA (4160M)

We go up a thalweg and after 3 hours of effort, the Kang La prayer flags welcome us. We are at the geographical border of Upper Dolpo and Lower Dolpo. 7hrs of walking
Final Altitude:4,160m
Meals: breakfast – lunch – dinner
Accommodation: night in a tent

DAY 10: TREKKING FROM SHEY GOMPA — (4,800 M) — CAMP SITE (4553M)

We visit there and back the hermitage of Tsakhang at the foot of impressive cliffs. It is here that Peter Matthiessen and Georges Schaller came to study the rut of Bharal (blue sheep) in 1973 (cf. Bibliography “The snow Leopard ”). It is also here that every year during the full moon of the month of the dragon a small pilgrimage takes place. Every 12 years during the year of the dragon and the month of the dragon, this pilgrimage takes on another dimension and the thousands of pilgrims undertake the tour of the mountain of crystal which dominates the monastery of Shey. It's a mini Kailash in a way. If we have time we will go to the hermitages of Tsarang and Gomoche. In the afternoon we climb to an unnamed pass and descend into a green valley used as a summer pasture by shepherds.

5hrs of walking
Final Altitude:4,553 m

We descend to the isolated village of Bijor. In the descent we fork towards the bön monastery of Shamling. Far from the eyes of the world, forgotten by time, this improbable monastery is worth the detour.

Visit from Champa Lakhang to Tokkyu village. To find out more about this valley, do not hesitate to read the books of Corneille Jest, a French ethnologist who studied the region in the 60s and 70s (see Biblio). Then we go down the Tarap valley and cross many hamlets. We make the unavoidable stop at the “Crystal Mountain School” sponsored by a French association before landing at the Dho Tarap campsite by the river.

DAY 19: BASE CAMP JHYARKOI LA — JHYARKOI LA — LAJAR SUMNA (4800M)

Steady climb to Jhyarkoi La. The path is traced by caravans of yaks. The trail becomes very steep before reaching the pass as well as at the start of the descent. By a curved balcony path, we reach our bivouac place near nomadic tents placed on the mountain pastures of Mola La.

Accommodation: night in a tent

DAY 21: TREKKING FROM CHHARKA BHOT TO MULUNG KHOLA CAMP (4870M)

A little after Chharka Bhot we cross the Barbung Khola then the Thasang Khola on two new bridges which make this route possible. Then we follow the Thasang Khola. After crossing large meadows with yaks then clearing our way through the austere gorges of the Thasang khola, we go up to mountain pastures and camp at the foot of the next day's pass. Provide many uses of the sandals, the river "let go" from time to time until it overwhelms the path traced on its right bank.

DAY 22: MULUNG KHOLA camp — NIRWA LA (5,140 M) — JUNGBEN LA (5,555 M) — JUNGBENLEY LA (5,125 M) – GHALDEN GHULDUNG KHOLA CAMP

The ascent of Nirwa La is easy (just a false flat to gain a footing on a grassy plateau...), the second is of another ilk: steep and endless but at 5,555 m the reward is worth it. A spectacular view of the mountains of Mukot himal, Dhaulagiri and as a bonus almost all of Mustang is offered to us. We descend by large switchbacks on a scree slope to reach the river valley of the Lhanhimar khola. At the start of the afternoon, crossing the Jungbenley Laou Kok La at 5,125 m will be a formality before descending the jet-black schist slopes and reaching a haven of happiness with trees, yes, yes! It had been 14 days since we had seen any... Beautiful plunging views of the Kyalungpa khola valley, the villages of Ghok and Sangta with at the bottom some selected and colored portions of the plates of the east of Mustang. And sheep all around that colonize the raised slopes. What happiness!

Meals: breakfast – lunch – dinner
Accommodation: night in a tent

DAY 23: GHALDEN GHULDUNG KHOLA CAMP — SANGTA — CAMP SITE (3700M)

From the camp in the juniper, we descend towards the "gate" of Dolpo, a path traced in the cliff which at times does not exceed 1 m wide! We then cross the Kyalungpa khola on a suspension bridge, then a Nepalese flat takes us to the village of Sangda having found two deep thalwegs to cross on the way... In the village, few places to set up camp. We head south to cross two collars to reach a flat space on the plateau, a veritable caravanserai for convoys of mules and yaks. Atmosphere guaranteed! More or less restless night depending on the number of convoys that stopped...

6hrs of walking
Final altitude: 3,700m
Meals: breakfast – lunch – dinner
Accommodation: night in a tent

DAY 24: CAMPSITE — BHIMA LOJUN TO KAGBENI (2840M)

The penultimate day of this great adventure. Unfortunately in (too) large part on the newly traced track between Jomosom and Sangta. From the camp, we cross a very small pass (4,400 m) where we find the old path. Then, the track rediscovered (beyond, the old path is no longer used by the locals and has become dangerous.), we engage in a descent to the 4,300 m height where we switch on the left towards the mountain pastures below. Superb views of Mustang and Tilicho peak. We cross an area of calcareous tuff in which many caves have been dug before finding sheep pastures. Direct descent to the furrow of the Kali Gandaki. We enter the village of Kagbeni, very typical Mustang

Final Altitude: 2,840m
Meals: breakfast – lunch – dinner
Accommodation: night in a lodge

DAY 25: KAGBENI – LUPRA – JOMSOM

Trip Organization
The Guide Leader (Sirdar) is responsible for and leader of the whole team and is treated with respect by all. Often he has earned his position by starting as a porter and rising through the ranks.

The Assistant Guide is actively helping clients under the leader’s direction and set camp.
The Porter is the load carrier for the trekking group. As Nepal is a mountain country with few roads, porters are employed to carry loads. Compliance with regulations and common courtesy dictates the maximum weight carried and the minimum wage paid. Porters are provided with gear based on the routes they follow and with insurance for alpine treks.

Each trekker is allotted the following maximum weights per person: Lodge (tea house) Accommodations: 15 kg maximum; Tent Camping: 22 kg maximum; Expeditions/summit ascents: 20 kg maximum. The porters are given a premium wage for carrying loads over 30 kg.
In addition, the Nepal Alpinist Club takes care to take out insurance for the Guide and porters. Specific equipment is allocated to them for crossing passes at altitude (even if wearers often refuse to put on shoes due to lack of habit).

Accommodations in Kathmandu

In Kathmandu, you will accommodate in a hotel. We use different hotels depending on availability. The two preferred hotels are:

Hotel Ramoda: Located in the heart of Thamel, this hotel is ideal for walking the bustling streets of Kathmandu. The spacious rooms all have a bathroom, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. A fully equipped and active dining room is available for all meals, and the breakfast buffet offers a wide choice of foods. The hotel offers currency exchange, laundry services, and luggage storage.

Sampada Garden: Located just 20 minutes on foot from Thamel and  Durbar Square, this hotel is convenient for exploring Kathmandu. The rooms have all the necessary comforts for your stay: air conditioning, bathroom, and Wi-Fi. Breakfasts are served as a generous buffet. The hotel provides currency exchange, laundry services, and luggage storage.

Accommodation during the Upper Mustang

For lodge accommodation: meals are prepared by the cooks of the lodge and are taken from the lodge's dining room.
Here is a typical one-day menu:

breakfast: eggs, toast or chapati, or Tibetan bread or pancakes, or pancakes, butter/jam, tea or coffee
Lunch: a main course, tea or coffee
Dinner: soup, main course, fruit (fresh or canned), tea or coffee
During the trek, tea or coffee is served with meals. Two cups per person are included.
Apart from these included menus, other drinks and foodstuffs will be at your expense.

Water: provide tablets (Hydroclovazone, Micropur, or another type) to disinfect the water you put in your water bottle, depending on the source and on the advice of your guide. It is sometimes possible to buy purified water and refill your water bottle without having to buy bottled water. You can also buy mineral water in the cities (not included in the price) but its ecological balance is poor, as you know. Also, we do not recommend it.

Preparation for the Trek

Preparing for the trek requires several months of preparation with 4 to 6-hour walks every weekend for stamina and participating in a sport that required short periods of high exertion.

Medical check-up

Being in good health is essential to fully enjoy your Alpinist Club trip. If your last medical visit was more than four years ago, please get another general physical exam and tell your doctor the nature of your trip (climate, altitude, difficulty, etc.). The altitude also has the effect of reviving dental problems or other chronic pain, so getting a dental checkup is also prudent. If you are undertaking a high-altitude expedition, we advise you to consult a mountain medicine specialist.

Acute Mountain Sickness
This trip takes place at high altitudes, so some people may experience altitude-related discomforts like headaches, loss of appetite, and swelling of limbs. Most of these symptoms usually go away within a few days, but sometimes they can develop into a serious illness: pulmonary or cerebral edema. There are no preventive drugs for AMS. Diamox diuretic is often effective for symptomatic relief, but you should first check with your doctor to verify that it is not contraindicated for you. Think about it before you go.
