We reserve this day for sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley and to prepare for trekking. After having a warm breakfast, we will leave the hotel in a private vehicle with an experienced tour guide. We will visit several UNESCO-listed world heritage sites in Kathmandu valley and the famous sacred Hindu temple, the Pashupatinath temple, Swayambhunath stupa, and Boudhanath stupa. These places are famous to have inherited ancient religious practices, architecture, and culture.

We leave Kathmandu in the morning for a superb flight to Lukla (35 min) where we meet our team. We first follow a gently sloping path. We cross a shoulder to a sheepfold then a big climb awaits us before a “Nepalese dish” in a rhododendron forest. We descend slightly and cross a torrent before ascending to the hamlet of Thukdingma. There is only one last zigzag climb in the middle of a forest to reach the village of Chutanga.

From Chutanga we go up a winding path through a wooded slope towards the austere gorge which dominates the village. Through the trees, we can make out Chutanga below and even the tall houses of Lukla. We can make out the mountains that border Thame valley. We reach the Kharka teng lodge and continue on an excellent path but often snowy or even icy in autumn (sticks recommended). We go up the slope under a rocky bar to reach a grassy shoulder. The view of the Himalayas now widens to Cho Oyu, this 8,153-meter peak located on the Tibetan border straddling the valleys of Thame and Gokyo lakes. From the pass, the descent to the Hinku Khola valley via another pass, the Zatrwa La, which can be seen at the bottom of the valley.

We descend in the direction of the valley to find a path on the side of the cliff which gives access to a valley. We cross it and cross a ridge. The path continues by crossing a new valley until arriving in front of a scree corridor that we go up on a superb arranged staircase. We cross a shoulder that gives access to a balcony path from which we discover the Hinku Khola valley dominated by the Mera peak. We descend into a forest of young rhododendrons then reach the site of Thulo Dunga. The descent continues along the cliff to Traktor. A “Nepalese flat” then leads us to Tashing Dingma followed by a severe climb up the cliffside on a steep staircase to pass a shoulder before descending on the other side to overlook the Hinku Khola from the edge of the moraine. The atmosphere is very austere. The trail now remains very close to the river that we finally leave by going up into a pine forest. We arrive at Khote.

From the village of Khote, we continue along the river with the south face of Mera peak in our sights. We pass the confluence of the Hinku Khola with the Sanu Khola and discover mountains that complete the panorama to the left of the Kyashar. A slow ascent on the stony moraine then we go up through the boulders along the river to Saure. The climb continues pleasantly through mountain pastures to Duk gompa, located in a cave. Then we move away from the river to climb the moraine to a sheepfold to finish on the stony flat of the Thangnag moraine basin. The village is located behind a large pile of pebbles facing the impressive heights of moraines that descend from the glacial complex of Mera peak. The views on the peaks are splendid:

Acclimatization day at altitude with the optional ascent of a panoramic grassy ridge above the village towards Thangnag Ri up to 4,900 meters or even a little more. Beautiful bird’s-eye view of all the glacial valleys that have been carved out at the foot of the mountains, from Gonghla to Mera peak. We leave the village crossing the stony moraine to find the start of the Mera La trail which is at the foot of a grassy moraine. The summit of Kyashar presents a vertical rock face that ends in a sharp point while at the rear we contemplate the succession of the glacial crest of the Charpote Himal of Kusum Kanguru and Gonghla. We progress on the flat and follow a sandy expanse then we go up to reach a new flat area. We go up on the moraine. We see the first houses at the foot of the moraine below Peak 41.

Acclimatization and practice of the mountaineering technique on a glacier towards Mera-la. This is an opportunity to check everyone’s equipment and to familiarize themselves with (crampons, ice ax, helmet, harness, and jumar handle).

We climb the moraine to pass the Mera – la at 5,415 meters. The mountain circus is strikingly beautiful. We pass a shoulder then a scree from where we can see the Mera Peak, then the Kangeta appears. The passage of the pass presents no difficulty and the views on Kusum Kanguru and peak 43 are superb. We reach the Mera La base camp located on the side of the Hunku khola valley at the foot of the Naulekh.

From the base camp of Mera peak we go up to the pass on the side of the glacial tongue then on snow slopes. Behind us: Everest and Nuptse are revealed then Makalu and Kangchenjunga appear in a pass between two peaks. The fifth 8000 of the day finally appears: the Cho Oyu. We arrive at Mera peak High Camp, located near the rocky outcrop at the foot of the Mera Glacier.

The hardest and most beautiful day of the trip! We start very early the ascent of the summit (northern slope) first by a regular slope at 30 ° then on the end which can reach 40 °. Sometimes it is necessary to equip with a fixed rope. From the central summit, we admire the most prestigious Himalayan summits including four 8000: Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Kangchenjunga. But also Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Baruntse, and the south face of Lhotse. The descent is long to reach the lodge of Khare.

ACCOMMODATION ON THE MERA PEAK CLIMB / TREK
Accommodation on the trek, before and after the climb of Mera Peak, is in comfortable lodges run by local families, unless people specify a preference for tents. Each lodge has a central communal area with a stove, while the bedrooms are unheated with two beds and mattresses, blankets, and pillows. You will need to bring a sleeping bag. The lodges generally have showers that are powered by gas and some use the infamous ‘drop’ toilets, though most now have flush systems.
Food on the trek is very good quality and a mixture of local Nepali / Sherpa food and western recipes. The local Dal Bhat or Momos are an excellent choice and burgers & chips are a common meal in Lukla, however less likely on the trek to Mera Peak as this area is not as developed, nor busy as the main trail north of Lukla to Everest. You will find everything from beer to batteries to Mars bars available in the lodges and local shops along the trail a Nepal price guide can be found here.
At Mera Peak base and High camp, you will be in mountain tents usually sleeping two persons per tent. You should bring a 4-season sleeping bag and also a good quality sleeping mat. For lower down, you may wish to use a sleeping bag liner to sleep in an open zipped 4-season bag so that you don’t get too hot. All equipment can be rented very easily.

Mera Peak Climbing
Mera Peak 6476m is the highest of the Trekking peaks in Nepal. Mera peak is a high mountain that requires little technical climbing on its normal route. Our climbing trip is 21 days, starting from Kathmandu to Lukla. Our climbing groups are normally in small teams of around 4 or 8 people with moderate climbing and hiking experience looking to try a snowy summit in Nepal which is not too technical but requires basic alpine skills. We trek in a small group with a team of porters take the kit to the lodges and set up the camps on the mera peak climbing. There will be a base camp and a high camp.
Mera Peak is not technically demanding but it is high at 6476m and has a long summit day. The climber, You need to take care of hydration. The snow route itself is not steep, but it is a big day out. You need to be comfortable with moving the main rope, clipping in, and maintaining an efficient pace and a safe line. You also need to be familiar with walking on crampons and able to self-arrest with your walking axe. We use base camp and high camp for this peak so experience camping on the snow and keeping warm, dry, hydrated, and well fed is important to ensure you’re in the best shape for the summit.
We ascend Mera Peak ideally, during the spring and autumn seasons as it’s the best time to climb the mountain for its astonishing views of the Himalayan Vista. Five 8,000m peaks are visible from the summit including Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga. Mera Peak climbing is an excellent option for anyone with moderate mountaineering experience. It is a not technical but challenging trekking peak due to its elevation. you need mountaineering skills requirement is very basic.
